Gallery BellJar presents:
Pomology - the Study & Practice of Growing Fruit

New work by Martha Sue Harris including video collaboration with Iu-Hui Chua and Rajendra Serber

With this mixed-media installation of sculpture, painting and video, I examine my experience of pregnancy through a lens colored by developmental biology, animal embryology, and pomology.  In reading about the way that an egg develops into a creature or how fruit grows I am looking to science, and the outside world for insight into my own experience.  So often in reading detailed observations of the journey from unfertilized egg to blastocyst to embryo to fetus, I would find lines like  “the mechanism for this process is unknown”, meaning, “this is what happens but no one knows how.”  This uncertainty is at the heart of this body of work, a deep sense of confusion and mystery about embryonic development and the various processes we can’t see that are going on inside at all times.

The concept of Preformationism was another inspiration.  This is an antiquated theory that all organisms past, present and future were created at the same time; each succeeding generation grows from fully-formed miniature versions of themselves that have lived inside the body since the beginning of creation (nested like a Russian doll perhaps).  Variations on this theory were popular from the late 1600’s up until the late 1700’s, coming into vogue with the invention of the microscope.  This generation of scientists wrote with great passion and poetry about the wonder of it all, and I relate to this era of writing much more than I do the current work in developmental biology (however more accurate it may be).  The video project in the show is very much inspired by my studies of Preformationism.
